Experiments has been conducted to establish the culture methods for the newly settled young of a sea cucumber, <I>Stichopus japonicus</I>. It is well known that the three types, blueish type, reddish type, and blackish type, are recognized within a species, <I>S. japonicus</I>. The present study is concerned with the former two types, because they are valuable for the commercial fishing in contrast with the latter.<BR>Late auricularia larvae of blueish type <I>S. japonicus</I> metamorphosed into doliolaria larvae regardless of the presence of their foods. While, settlement of pelagic larvae was largey facilitated by the presence of their foods, epi-benthic diatoms.<BR>A simple and easy method for collecting newly settled youngs was deviced. Namely, some poly-carbanate plates (30×60cm) with epi-benthic diatoms on their surface were laid horizontally in the culture sea water at the time when almost all the larvae metamorphosed into doliolaria larvae. In the case of blueish type, the member of collecting youngs, attained from 450 to 3, 100 individuals/plate (1, 600 finds./plate in mean) .<BR>Subsequently, the collecting yovngs could be cultured on the plate, feeding on living epi-benthic diatoms adhered to the plate. Otherwise, they also could be cultured in a tank without plates, feeding on f reezed epi-benthic diatoms instead of living diatoms. In both types, about a month later, average body length of youngs cultured in the latter method was supperior to (about twice) those in the former method. This might be resulted from the difference in a abundance of foods.<BR>After the youngs attained 0.1g in body weight, dried two kinds of surgassum, <I>Eisenia bicyclis</I> and <I>Ecklonia cava</I>, could be available for their foods.<BR>In this case, the youngs attained over 1g in body weight at 6 months after fertilization.<BR>A kind of marking can easily be carried out on the youngs of 1g size.
