That directional verbs of motion such as 'go' undergo a variety of grammaticalization processes is a language universal. In Mandarin, we see the same situation when qù occurs in serial verb constructions. This study is an investigation of the interpersonal functions of qù in sentence final position. From section 2 to 5, we describe its modality role expressing the speaker's will, rhetorical question, command, and irony. Section 6 and 7 deal with the most important question i. e. the motivation for the grammaticalization of qù. It is pointed out that the verb structure and the interpersonal situation make qù behave as if it were a modality marker although it has not yet been categorized as a final particle exactly.
