Objective: Cryptococcal meningitis is one of the serious and common opportunistic infections in AIDS patients, especially in Thailand. To determine the origin of infection and the route of transmission in the patients with cryptococcal meningitis, we isolated Cryptococcus neoformans from chicken excreta in Phayao, one of the rural provinces of northern Thailand.
Methods: C. neoformans was isolated from 36 of 150 samples (24%) of chicken excreta and serotype was nothing but serotype A.
Result and conclusion: From these results, it was suggested that C. neoformans in chicken excreta might cause cryptococcosis in AIDS patients living in northern Thailand. Etiological studies for the relationship between clinical isolates and environmental isolates are important to prevent the incidence of cryptococcosis in AIDS patients.
