Object: We evaluated the significnace of HIV counseling at a public health center by analyzing the effect of couseling on the anxeity of clients taking HIV antibody test.Subjects and Methods: Subjects were 87 people (59 male & 28 female, mean age 32.6±11.4y/o) who took an antibody test at the public health center of Chiba City between November, 1999 and October, 2000. Their anxiety levels on four occasions before and after test or notification were self-assessed. We compared anxiety levels of the counseled group (24 male & 8 female, mean age 34.9±14.0y/o) and the non-counseled group (35 male & 20 female, mean age 31.3±9.6y/o).Results: The anxiety level of the counseled group was singinicantly higher than that of the non-counseled group on all occasions. The anxiety level of the counseled group significantly decreased after counseling. Anxiety levels of both groups were the highest during the period before notification. Conclusion: 1. There existed people who were intensely worried about being infected with HIV and willing to accept counseling on the day of HIV antibody test.
2. Counseling was effective in reducing their anxiety levels.
3. Counseling on the day of the HIV antibody test, when the clients' interest in AIDS is increased, is expected to lead them to behavioral change to prevent HIV infection.
