On Currents with Storm Surges near River Mouths

There exist scarcely reliable records and data of storm surges even near coast and river mouths. In this study, currents with storm surges near the river mouths are studied experimentally by use of hydraulic model of rivers and canals in Osaka City, which had been proved to be able to reproduce water level changes caused by the past representative storm surges. There is a plan to construct gates in the rivers in Osaka City to prevent inundation of any storm surge, so that the currents are studied under the two conditions: (1) before construction of the gates and (2) after construction of the gates. The currents are deduced from storm surge loci or trajectries of floats. And it is found that maximum current velocity on the storm surge loci has a relation to time duration of the storm surge.
