Skin protection for hand dermatitis in surgeons and nurses.

Hand dermatitis caused by scrubbing-scrubbing dermatitis-is troublesome for surgeons and nurses. It is difficult for them to avoid causes of the scrubbing dermatitis, such as antiseptics and surgical rubber gloves.The lotion type skin protectant (S-7990, methacrylic acid ethyl acrylate copolymer in 70% isopropanol) was attempted to evaluateclinical availability for the hand dermatitis insurgeons and nurses. After one minute brushingwith an antiseptic soap, more than 80% of S-7990 remained on the skin surface, and about50% of S-7990 remained after three timesbrushing.In bacteriological examinations by the streakplate method, the decrease of bacteriae wasobserved after an application of S-7990. It wassuggested that S-7990 had a bacteriocidal effect. No bacteria was detected in th case of brushingafter a topical application of S-7990 on thehand. In patch tests of vegetables and antiseptics, prevention effects against allergic reactions werenot found.Cliical uses of S-7990 for surgeons withscrubbing dermatitis, skin eruptions wereimproved markedly. Bacteriological problemsand contaminated operations were not observed.
