Nitrate poisoning in fad pigs was caused by the intake of aerating disposal excreta water in June, 1997, in one farm in Chiba prefecture. Some fad pigs died immediately after returning aerating disposal water into the barn. The clinical signs of dead animals were depression, pallor body, dyspnoea with mulberry colored blood and lack of blood clotting. The methemoglobin concentrations in the blood of dead animals were more than 90% and high concentrations of nitrite-nitrogen were detected in stomach content of the dead animals and returned aerating disposal excreta water. The nitrite-nitrogen concentration levels were increased after the anaerobiotic dispensation, because disposal excreta water was utilized for this dispensation cycle. Present cause of the nitrate poisoning might be caused by the intake of aerating disposal excreta water with high concentration of nitrite-nitrogen.
