Change of the molecular weight of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) in the presence of coupling agents has been studied at elevated temperatures. Terephthalic acid and dimethyl terephthalate were used as coupling reaction agents, and calcium acetate and a modified polyhydric phenol as a catalyst. The molecular weight of PET increased by 20 to 70% with catalyst and coupling reaction agents (200 ppm). Dynamic viscoelasticity showed that the increase was not due to intermolecular crosslinking. In addition, ESR showed that the carbonyl radical of PET [O= (C) -] was stable, and the reaction proceeded by the radical mechanism and not by transesterification.
