The effect of added nonionic surfactant has been investigated on the phase separation behavior in sol-gel systems based on hydrolysis and polycondensation of methyltrimethoxysilane. The nonylphenylether with 10 oxyethylene units worked to suppress the phase separation as well as to extend the composition range of co-continuous morphology by being distributed relatively evenly to the gel- and fluid-phases. The nonylphenylether with 70 oxyethylene units, on the other hand, enhanced the phase separation. In addition, due to the preferential distribution of the surfactant to the fluid phase, the morphology with minor gel phase was obtained at higher surfactant concentrations.
