Block copolymers of a non aqueous dispersion (NAD) type for thermoplastic coating which had the hydrocarbonsoluble and -insoluble segments were synthesized in aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents with polymeric peroxides. With a view to application of NAD to thermoplastic coating formed at ordinary temperature, NADs composed of different insoluble polymer segments were prepared. Viscosity, dispersion stability, average molecular weight, and particle size of resulting NAD polymers were measured. Further, effect of polymer composition on optical properties and surface smoothness of NAD film was investigated. As a result, it was found that solubility parameter, glass-transition temperature, and refractive index of insoluble segments had great influence on properties of NAD film. The synthesis of NAD which had low viscosity, good dispersion stability and good film formability at ordinary temperature was successfully achieved. From dynamic viscoelastic behavior patterns, it was estimated that NAD film had microdomain structure of block copolymers composed of soluble and insoluble polymer segments.
