The polymerization conditions for the polycondensation of <I>N</I>, <I>N</I>′-bis (trimethylsilyl) -substituted bis (4-aminophenyl) ether (SiODA) with isophthaloyl chloride (IPC) in the presence of poly (ether sulfone) (PES) in an amide-type solvent were investigated to form poly [<I>N</I>, <I>N</I>′- (oxydi-<I>p</I>-phenylene) isophthalamide] (aramid 44I). The polycondensation of SiODA with IPC proceeded homogeneously in the PES solution in <I>N</I>-methyl-2-pyrrolydone NMP or in <I>N</I>, <I>N</I>-dimethyl acetamide (DMAc) over the entire PES/44I composition range, and the inherent viscosity of 44I formed at the PES/44I 30/70 composition was as high as that of 44I formed by the polymerization in the absence of PES. The GPC curves of PES did not change throughout the polymerization of 44I, and hence no reaction such as chain extension had occurred on PES during the polymerization of 44I. In case of the polymerization of 44I in the presence of PES, the inherent viscosity of 44I formed did not decrease at a high monomer concentration (0.6-0.7 mol/L) or high reaction temperature (50-70°C), compared with that of 44I formed by the polymerization in the absence of PES.
