The viscoelastic behavior of a silicone gel containing fine particles in electric fields was studied. The silicone gel was prepared by heating its preoligomer mixed with fine particles of the cobalt (II) poly (methacrylic acid) salt (PMACo particles) having a small amount of absorbed water. The viscoelasticity of the silicone gel was measured by a viscoelastic spectrometer. The silicone gel changed its viscoelastic properties in electric fields. The electroviscoelastic effect was observed when the PMACo particles in the gel were contacted together before applying an electric field. The dynamic shear modulus and the loss tangent of the silicone gel could be controlled by the electric fields. The changes of the two parameters were kept constant with the repeated electric signal. The electroviscoelastic effect of the silicone gel was larger than that of a suspension of the PMACo particles in a sillicone oil.
