In order to prepare packing materials for HPLC columns, various types of hydrophilic vinyl monomers were copolymerized with cross-linking agents into hydrophilic polymer gels either by the conventional suspension or inverse suspension polymerization in the presence of a diluent. The gels obtained were packed into stainless steal columns. The columns were evaluated in terms of pressure resistance, exclusion limit and hydrophilicity. It is found that all gels were hard type gels having pressure limits higher than 110kg/cm<SUP>2</SUP> The hydrophilicity of gels could be evaluated quantitatively by means of solubility parameters. Gels prepared by the inverse suspension polymerization were more hydrophilic than those prepared by the conventional suspension polymerization. Acrylamide (AA) -<I>N, N'</I>-methylenebis (acrylamide) (BA) gel was most hydrophilic among the eight samples examined. Furthemore, the exclusion limit of the AA-BA column could be changed from 2×10<SUP>3</SUP> to 3×10<SUP>6</SUP> by changing the ratio of the diluent to the AA monomer, the ratio of AA to BA, or by addition of PEG to the monomer phase.
