Polystyrene in 1, 2-dichloroethane and cyclohexane was irradiated under air atmosphere by UV to investigate change of the fluorescence spectra of degraded polystyrene with increasing main-chain scission. The fluorescence wave lengths of the polystyrene irradiated in cyclohexane do not shift from those of the original polystyrene; but the wave lenghs of the polystyrene irradiated in 1, 2-dichloroethane shift significantly from those of the original polystyrene. The rates of both main-chain scission and formation of carbonyl groups in 1, 2-dichloroethane are larger than those in cyclohexane. Variation of the excimer formation of the polystyrene irradiated in cyclohexane against irradiation time is as follows: Excimer formation decreases until 2 hours, then increases to a maximum value at 8 hours, then decreases with longer irradiation times. Substitution of the hydrogen atoms on a skeleton of a polystyrene chain by carbonyl groups and chorine atoms leads to steric hindrances for the excimer formation.
