In order to obtain fundamental data for the production of composite materials with light density and good mechanical properties, specimens cut from polymer films filled with glass-micro balloon or shilasu balloon were subjected to different mechanical tests. The results were compared with those for the composites filled with glass-beads.<BR>The finite element method was applied to the effects of stress concentration around the filled particles on the particle's fracture.<BR>The experiments and the stress analysis gave the following conclusions :<BR>1) Using such empty shell particles as glass micro-balloons and shilasu balloons for reinforcement fillers, it is possible to make the density of the composites clearly decrease without loss of the mechanical haracteristics of the matrix.<BR>2) The mechanical properties of the composites show that at the initial, small deformation stage, elastic moduli are larger than those of the matrix thermo-plastic polymers, and at the large deformation region the mechanical properties approach those of the matrices, so that the composites gain ductility and resistibility to impact fracture.
