1H NMR spectra of OH in several methacrylates with phosphoric group were measured. The relaitonship between the polarities evaluated from the ppm values and the adhesive strength to bovine teeth was studied to speculate the adhesion mechanism in dental adhesives. When the ppm values changed to higher magnetic field, the adhesive strength became lower and 2-methacryloxyethyl phenyl phosphoric acid, of which OH signal was found at the lowest field, gave the highest adhesive strength among the phosphoric derivatives studied. These results suggest that hydrogen bonding with tooth substrates easily takes place when methacrylate with high polarity is applied.
