Biodeterioration of polymeric materials was studied to clarify the interaction between polymeric materials and tissue. Ten kinds of aromatic condensation polymers, such as polyesters, polyamides, and polyimides, medical grade poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) and silicone rubber were implanted subcutaneously in dog (in vivo). The same materials were stored in buffer solution (pH7.4) at 37°C (in vitro) and in air at room temperature (in air) for comparison. These materials implanted or stored for 26 months were examined by differential interference microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, mechanical property testing, viscometry, and infrared spectroscopy. The additives were eluted from the PVC kept under the in vitro and in vivo conditions. The differences in the mechanical properties among the in vivo, in vitro, and in air samples were small. The other measurements for both of the in air and in vitro samples gave practically identical results with those for the in vivo samples. Although the condensation polymers are generally considered to be biodegradable, those used in this experiment were stable under the conditions employed.
