Large Scale Column and Its Application to Column Fractionation of Linear Polyethylene

A large scale column apparatus was designed for fractionation of large amount of polymer sample. With this apparatus, 40g low-pressure polyethylene was fractionated under good condition into 32 fractions at 126°C, using xylene, butyl cellosolve, and Celite as solvent, non-solvent, and innert support, respectively. Main points of improvement in this column apparatus are to use stainless steel for boiler, which enabled to maintain temperature deviation between upper and lower part of the column within 1°C, and to equip with some devices to take easily packed content out of the column.
