The orientation in the crystalline and amorphous regions of a series of tubular polyethylene films prepared under various conditions has been studied. No orientation was found in the amorphous regions of these films by X-ray study. It is found that the degree of orientation of the crystalline regions increased as the blow-up ratio decreases, the haul-off speed increases and the cooling rate at the lower extrusion temperature increases. The orientation of the crystalline regions on the surface of the film seems to be different from that in the inner part of the film. On the surface of the film, the crystallites are arranged with the b-axis nearly parallel to the machine direction (MD), and as the blow-up ratio increases or the hauloff speed decreases, the 110 plane tends to lie in the plane of the film. The crystallites in the inner part of the film, which determines the orientation of the crystalline regions in the film, are arranged at random and as the haul-off speed increases or the blow-up ratio decreases, b-axis becomes arranged at random in the plane perpendicular to the MD and the aand the c-axis are also in random arrangement. The orientation of the crystalline regions of tubular polyethylene films is may be considered to belong to the Keller Type II.
