The effect of soil treatment with polyacrylic hydrazide on the uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium by mulberry plants was investigated, using two kinds of soils, Saga soil (field soil with mature mulberry plants) and Iwakura soil (non-cultivated field, red-yellow soil). The uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium by mulberry plants increased markedly when the Saga soil was treated with 0.02%-0.2% polyacrylic hydrazide. In the case of the Iwakura soil, treatment with 0.02%-0.08% polyacrylic hydrazide had a similar effect, but, when the polyacrylic hydrazide concetration was high (0.2%), the uptake of the elements contained in the fertilizer (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) was low. The results obtained appear to reflect the differences in soil fertility, degree of consolidation of the soil particles by polyacrylic hydrazide and type of clay mineral in soil.
