The mechanical properties of the cocoon filament from the silkworn, Bombyx mori, (HN 101×HC 86), treated with a juvenile hormone alanogue (JHA) were studied, and the following results were obtained based on stress-strain measurements and size curves of the filament.The percentage of cocoon shell weight and the length of the cocoon filament were distinctly increased by JHA treatment during the 4th and 5th larval instars, while the cocoon shell weight was generally similar to that of the control. The plateau, showing the largest value for the filament size was extended by the JHA treatment. The strength of the cocoon filament in the control increased from the outer to the inner part of the cocoon shell, whereas the strength of the JHA-treated filament gradually decreased in the same direction. In both the control and JHA treatment, the enongation of the cocoon filament from the outer part of the cocoon shell was more pronounced than that of the cocoon filament from the inner part. The rate of decrease of elongation in the treated cocoon shell was higher than that of the control. After JHA treatment the cocoon filaments were softer and showed a higher elasticity than the control as shown by the values of the tensil initial resistance measurements.
