The experiments were carried out to clarify the relationship between growth of hard-wood cutting of mulberry tree (Ichinose) and moisture tension (from pF 0 to pF 4.1), using volcanic ash soils and red-yellow soils. In the case of volcanic ash soils, the higher percentage (80-100%) of sprouting and root initiation from cutting silps were obtained under soil moisture from pF 1.5-2.0 plot to pF 2.2-2.7 plot. The root fresh weight also exceeded 1 gram under the condition from pF 2.0-2.5 plot to pF 2.5-2.8 plot. In the care of red-yellow soils, the percentage of sprouting from cutting silps was more than 80% from pF 0-0.2 plot to pF 2.5-3.2 plot. But, root fresh weight exceeded about 1 gram under the condition from pF 1.6-1.7 plot to pF 3.4-3.7 plot. From the above mentioned results it may be concluded as follow: The optimum soil moisture tension for the production of young cuttage ranges from water folding capacity after 24hrs (FC 24) to moisture, of rupture of capillary.
