In order to investigate the mordanting effects of cupric ion on the silk, the silk habutae previously dyed with a few acid mordant dyes were mordanted with cupric nitrate. The mordanting time and the color fastnesses to light and washing on their samples were compared with those of mordanted with potassium dichromate. The uptake of Cu (II) reached an equilibrium state when its uptake was reached almost an equimolar with dye uptaken, and little variation was recognized in the subsequent three attributes of color, then the mordanting was regarded as completed. It was recognized that the time by cupric nitrate mordanting was shorter by 1.5 to 3 hours than the potassium dichromate mordanting, though the time differed according to dyes used. Although the color fastness to light of the silk habutae previously dyed with C. I. Mordant Yellow 3, which mordanted with cupric nitrate, became lower by 2 grade compared with that of mordanted with potassium dichromate, it was 2 grade higher in both samples dyed with C. I. Mordant violet 5 or Blue 13. The resulting alteration by washing test was shown to be the lowest class in any samples mordanted with cupric nitrate and a marked desorption of Cu-dye complexes was recognized.
