Iodine concentrations which caused the poisoning in the silkworm were studied, using an artificial diet. The iodine poisoning was judged based on the retardation of the development, the mortality of larvae and pupae, the occurrence of deformed pupae, and particularly on the survival rate of pupae.As the results, 100ppm iodine caused the complete larval death and 50ppm iodine resulted in the failure of about 50% of larvae to pupate and the appearance of numerous deformed pupae, suggesting the severe toxicity to the larvae. However, the toxicity of iodine, less than 50ppm in concentration, was not clearly detected and remained to be clarified.
