When the shoots were cut, their respiratory rate increased in direct proportion to the length of increased circumference of the section. The relation could be expressed by the following empirical equation:Y=0.078Xwhere X and Y represent the length of circumference of the Section in cm and the increased respiratory rate in mg CO2/hr, respectively.When the shoots were removed a cold chamber where they had been stored at 2.5°C, their respiratory rate increased markedly at first, then decreased gradually and reach a plateau in 36 hours, which was half as high as the maximum rate.
