Respiratory rates of shoots of mulberry were markedly different from sample to sample under the same temperature when the respiratory rate were expressed on a dry weight as well as on a volume basis. Wheareas, if they expressed on a surface area basis, respiratory rates approached to a definite value for each temperature. Therefore, it is advisable to express the respiratory rate on a surface area basis.The relation between temperatures (T) and respiratory rates of annual shoots (Ra), for 1002cm2 of surface area, was expressed by the following empirical equation I:Ra=0.4705e0.0718T……Equation IThe calculated value of Q10 was 2.05 by this equation.The relation between temperatures (T) and relative respiratory rates (Rr), expressed as the percentage of the respiratory rate measured at 20.0±1.1°C per sample, was expressed as follows:Rr=19.9898e0.0733T……Equation IIUsing this equation, respiratory rate measured at a definite temperature could be altered to the expected rate at the other arbitrary temperature.The respiratory rate of shoots at a specific temperature can be obtained from the following quation.R(t2)R(t1)·Rr(t2)/Rr(t1)……Equation IIIWhere R(t1) was the value of respiratory rate measured at t1°C and R(t2) was the expected value at t2°C. The solution of the equation II was expressed as Rr(t1) and Rr(t2), when the T of the equation II was substituted for t1 in the former and t2 in the latter.
