White root rot disease of mulberry tree is caused by Rosellinia necatrix (HARTIG) BERL. The authors have tried to establish an effective method of detection of fungi existing in the soil and found out that aniline blue added to the culture media was changed to yellow color by the organisms. Tests on the color change processes of aniline blue showed that the yellow color which appeared after the disappearance of blue color was caused specially by a few kinds of fungi, such as the white root rot fungus, although the blue color of the reagent easily disappeared due to the alkalinity of the medium by the tested bacteria, fungi and chemicals. This reaction may be used as a new practical method for R. necatrix in a soil sample.
