Six blind, but healthy students living in the same dormitory (22 to 27 years of age) subjected to acu-puncture (Hari). The treatment was applied at the site where in Oriental medicine was indicated to affect the function of the kidney. The subjects divided into two groups of three men: The first group was subjected the treatment for three days, followed by three days of control, while in the second group the control period was followed by the treatment period in order to avoid possible effect of from day to day variation of weather and food.
Twenty-four hours' urine specimens were chemically determined in their stress indice of uropepsin and 17-hydroxycorticoids. The results clearly shows that the activity of the adrenal cortical system was suppressed by the treatment, because both indice significantly decreased (uropepsin decreased by 13 per cent, and 17-hydroxycorticoids decreased by 11 per cent, in the average; both changes were statistically significant, namely, p<0.01 and p=0.05, respectively).
The implication of these findings was discussed. In the Oriental medicine it is generally accepted that two elements control the vital activity of organisms. These are called "In"(negative potential) and "Yo"(positive potential). As long as the organism maintains its health, both elements are in the adequate balance. If any one of two elements becomes overemphasized, however, disease or disorders pursues: The disease of "Kyo"(emptiness) results from the relative hyperactivity of "In, " while the other sort of disease of "Jitsu"(redundancy) results from the relative hyperactivity of "Yo". On the premise of this antagonism theory of the mechanism which allegedly provocates all diseases, the therapy of "Ho"(replenishment) is applied to the disease of "Kyo" in its nature, and that of "Sha"(reduction) is applied to the disease of " Jitsu ". When the stress concept and the result of this experimental study are combined in this point, the acu-puncture seemingly indicates the therapy of "Ho" which obviously alleviating stress. As a principle, therefore, it is quite opposit to the treatment of moxibustion which induced stress at least in an animal experiment of our laboratory.
