The fishes of genus Melamphaës were studied in detail by NORMAN (1929) and PARR (1931, 1933). PARR added four species to the fourteen species reported by NORMAN. There are known Melamphaës cristiseps, M. luguburis, M. nigrofulvous, M. mizolepis and M. biopinosus etc. out of eighteen known species from the North Pacific (mainly off the coast of California, U.S.A). But these species seem not to have been recorded from Japanese waters.
Recently I have examined the specimens of deep-water fishes gathered by our office's resarch boat, No.1 Asahi-maru (56 ton), and chartered boat, No.10 Shinkai-maru (51.6 ton) during investigation of deep-water fishing grounds (500-1000 meters depth) in bottom trawl without otter boards in Tôhoku and adjacent region during July-October, 1951, and made sure the occurrence in Japanese waters of one species M. cristiceps GILBERT (new Japanese name Kabuto-uo) of this genus. Four specimens were collected and they were each almost of the same body length, from 96.5mm to 98.5mm in length without caudal fin. Collected date, location and depth are as follows.
1. (96.5mm) 27 July 1951, off Kesennuma, Miyagi Pref., trawl fishing ground 234. Depth 850m.
2-3. (98.5, 97.5mm) 4 Aug. 1951, off Kuji, Iwate Pref., trawl fishing ground 198. Depth 600m.
4. (97. 5mm) 24 July 1951, off Kinkazan Miyagi Pref., trawl fishing ground 259. Depth 600m. Bad condition.
Body proportions of these specimens were somewhat beyond upper or lower limit of NORMAN'S description, but well agree with GAMAN'S and PARR'S description.
