To make the early diagnosis of failure of passive transfer (FPT) and the shortage of Ig content in eolostrum which are the most common predisposing factors of infection and death in newborn foals, the practicability of the latex agglutination test (LAT) using soap-free latex as a handy and rapid method for measurement of serum and colostral IgG in the field were examined. LAT was carried out on serum samples taken from 49 clinically healthy newborn foals less than 7 days old, as well as on colostral samples collected from 14 clinically healthy mares. LAT and single radial immunodiffusion (SRID) were compared on accuracy in estimating serum and colostral IgG. The results obtained indicate that there was a good correlation in the IgG level estimated between LAT and SRID. Namely, LAT was positive when applied to serum samples which had an IgG concentration below 400mg/dl by SRID, and negative when applied to serum samples with a concentration above 400mg/dl, within a short time (2-5 minutes). In addition, although it was difficult to clarify the reactivity of LAT to colostral samples, there was a tendency for LAT to be negative when the concentration was above 4, 000mg/dl by SRID and to be positive when the concentration was below 4000mg/dl. The results mentioned above indicate that LAT had an advantage of giving specific and semiquantitative results rapidly for the measurement of serum and colostral IgG in the field.
