To examine the pathogenicity of Getah virus (GV) for horses, various strains which had been passaged 0-10 times in cell cultures were used for experimental infection of horses. Horses experimentally exposed to the 0-3rd passaged viruses exhibited pyrexia ranging from 38.5-40.2°C (2-6 days after inoculation), edema of the hind legs (3-7 days) and enlargement of the submandibular lymph node (2-5 days), but not urticarial rash on any portions of the body. Hematological findings included mild lymphopenia, lymphocytosis and monocytosis. Viremia occurred 1-5 days after inoculation and the virus in relatively low titers was recovered also from nasal swabs at 3-4 days. Serum neutralizing (SN) antibody was detected in all the horses 6-7 days after inoculation. Antibody titers of 1:320-1:640 were obtained even 6 months after inoculation. From these results, it appeared that there were no significant differences in the pathogenicity of GV for horses among various strains passing cell cultures 0-3 times and that rash was hardly produced in horses experimentally infected by intramuscular inoculation with a large inoculum size. On the other hand, horses experimentally exposed to the 10th cell-passaged viruses exhibited no clinical or hematological changes, except rash on the cervical region. In addition, no viremia was confirmed in any horses, although SN antibody was detected in all the horses. From these results, it was concluded that the pathogenicity of GV for horses was attenuated by cell passage.
