Radiographical Studies on the Ossification of the Thoroughbreds

Ossification changes in the olecranon tuberosity and the tuber calcaneus were examined radiographically on 593 Thoroughbreds 0 to 24 months of age. A method was devised to assess the stage of development by recording information on ossification centers and growth plates. The standard radiographs were corrected and added to the skeletal score. The results obtained were as follows: (1) At the age of 0-3 months the olecranon tuberosity and the tuber calcaneus varied in deformity. (2) At the age of 10-17 months no deformity was defined in the tuber calcaneus. (3) The olecranon tuberosity at 24 months of age was not different in shape from that at 21 months. (4) A union was completed between the tuberosity and the body of the calcaneus in 64% of the horses 24 months old. (5) The bone maturity process could be divided into 9 stages at the olecranon tuberosity and into 10 stages at the tuber calcaneus of the horses 24 months old to complete the union. (6) The stage of development was replaced by the skeletal score and evaluated to this score. (7) The skeletal score curve at 0-7 months of age presented a steep slope. (8) The skeletal maturity progress was slow at 8, 9, 12, 14-16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 22 months of age. (9) The skeletal score curve continued to the end of the experimental period.
