The X-ray tube voltage and the tube current which were necessary for ventro-dorsal radiography of the equine hip joint were investigated. Then examination was carried out to reduce the scattering beam effectively with a Lisholm-Blende and a lead diaphragm. As a result, it was possible to get radiographs available for diagnosis. (1) The X-ray tube voltage used was 80 kVp. It was enough for the radiography of the equine hip joint. (2) The X-ray mass used was 650-820 mAs at 80 kVp. With increase in tube voltage, it decreased gradually to about 40 mAs at 140 kVp. The contrast and the sharpness of the picture showed a tendency to be worse with the increase in tube voltage. (3) Two Lisholm-Blendes with a grid-ratio of 6:1 and 10:1, respectively, were used in a single or cross condition to block the scattering beam. The finest picture was gotten with a cross Lisholm-Blende at a gridratio of 10:1, the second with a cross Lisholm-Blende at a grid-ratio of 6:1, and the third with a single Lisholm-Blende at a grid-ratio of 10:1, These pictures needed 900 mAs in maximum when tube voltage was set at 110 kVp, taking the allowance of the tube capacity into consideration. (4) A radiograph taken by the aid of a lead diaphragm to cut off the scattering beam was better than a radiograph taken by the aid of a Lisholm-Blende only when the other conditions were the same. (5) A fine ventro-dorsal radiograph of the equine hip joint was obtained under the following conditions: The output was 600-900 mAs at 80-110 kVp with a lead diaphragm and a cross Lisholm-Blende. The focus-film distance was 120cm.
