As a part of the fundamental studies for the establishment of protection and proper management of equine hoofs, the water contents of the hoof wall, sole, and frog were measured in 120 hoofs of horses. These horses were Thoroughbred, Anglo-arab, half bred, and Japanese native and 3 to 14 years of age. The results obtained ware as follows. 1. The water contents of the hoof wall, sole, and frog were 27.1±5.6, 33.7±5.7, and 38.7±9.0%, respectively. There was a significant difference in water content between any two of these portions of the hoof. The difference in the water content of any portion was in significant between the fore and hind limbs. 2. The water contents of sole and frog were at a higher level in Japanese native horses than in the horses of any other breed. A significant difference in water content was observed between the soles of Anglo-arabian and Japanese native horses, and also between the frogs of Japanese native and half-bred horses. 3. The water contents of the frog was at a higher level in the 3-year-old group than in any other age group. There was a significant difference in the water content of any portion between the 4-year-old group and any other age group of 6 or more years. 4. The hoof wall was lower in water content in the females than in the males, including geldings. 5. There was no significant difference in water content between the colored hoof and the white one. In the future, histomorphological and biochemical studies on equine hoofs may be required for efficient limb and hoof management and the prevention and treatment of hoof diseases.
