Thermal Changes of Carbonate-Containing Hydroxyapatites

The thermal changes in chemical composition of three kinds of carbonate-containing hydroxyapatites (CO3HAp), HAP-100, HAP-200 and HAP-300 were studied according to TG, IR, XRD and chemical analysis.<BR>HAP-100 which was prepared by mixing of a phosphate solution and suspension of calcium hydroxide, was CO<SUB>3</SUB>HAp type B and its chemical composition was Ca<SUB>9.81</SUB> (PO<SUB>4</SUB>) <SUB>5.65</SUB> (HPO<SUB>4</SUB>) <SUB>0.24</SUB> (CO<SUB>3</SUB>) <SUB>0.19</SUB> (OH) <SUB>1.81</SUB> 2.7H<SUB>2</SUB>O. Upon heating at 1000°C, HAP-100 decomposed to Ca<SUB>9.81</SUB> (PO<SUB>4</SUB>) <SUB>5.89</SUB> (OH) <SUB>1.95</SUB> and 0.19CO<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>2-</SUP>.<BR>On the other hand, HAP-200 and HAP-300 were prepared by the hydrolysis of CaHPO<SUB>4</SUB> and CaHPO<SUB>4</SUB>·2H<SUB>2</SUB>O, respectively, in the presence of CaCO<SUB>3</SUB> and both CO<SUB>3</SUB>HAp were type A·B one. The chemical composition of HAP-200 was Ca<SUB>9.80</SUB> (PO<SUB>4</SUB>) <SUB>5.80</SUB> (CO<SUB>3</SUB>) <SUB>0.20</SUB> (OH) <SUB>1.00</SUB> (CO<SUB>3</SUB>) <SUB>0.40</SUB> 1.2H<SUB>2</SUB>O. Upon heating at 1200°C HAP-200 decomposed to Ca<SUB>9.67</SUB> (PO<SUB>4</SUB>) <SUB>5.80</SUB> (OH) <SUB>1.94</SUB>, 0.13CaO and 0.6CO<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>2-</SUP>.<BR>HAP 300 with the composition of Ca<SUB>9.71</SUB> (PO<SUB>4</SUB>) <SUB>5.71</SUB> (CO<SUB>3</SUB>) <SUB>0.29</SUB> (OH) <SUB>0.71</SUB> (CO<SUB>3</SUB>) <SUB>0.50</SUB>1.8H<SUB>2</SUB>O caused similar thermal changes upon heating at 1200°Cto decompose to Ca<SUB>9.51</SUB> (PO<SUB>4</SUB>) <SUB>5.71</SUB> (OH) <SUB>1.89</SUB>, 0.20Ca0 and 0.79CO<SUB>3</SUB><SUB>2-</SUB>.<BR>The weight loss of these carbonate-containing hydroxyapatites were induced through elimination of physical adsorbed water in the range of 500-600°C, followed by elimination of chemical adsorbed water and CO<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>2-</SUP>.
