On crystallization of CaCO<SUB>3</SUB> from Ca (NO<SUB>3</SUB>) <SUB>2</SUB> aqueous solution by homogeneous precipitation technique, the effect of Mg<SUP>2+</SUP>, and Ba<SUP>2+</SUP> ions on the morphology of CaCO<SUB>3</SUB> was studied at 90°C. The results are as follows : <BR>(1) The presence of Mg<SUP>2+</SUP> ion inhibited a transformation of needle-like aragonite into calcite. Mg<SUP>2+</SUP> ion did not form a solid solution with CaCO<SUB>3</SUB>.<BR>(2) The presence of Ba<SUP>2+</SUP> ion stimulated the formation of plate-like vaterite. Vaterite transformed into, calcite at 90°C but into both calcite and aragonite at room temperature. Ba<SUP>2+</SUP> ion did not form a solid solution with CaCO<SUB>3</SUB>.<BR>(3) The particle diameter of needle-like aragonite decreased with addition of Mg<SUP>2+</SUP> ion. There is the optimum amount of Mg (NO<SUB>3</SUB>) <SUB>2</SUB> addition to obtain aragonite crystals with uniform size.
