Microscopic observations on a number of specimens collected from the Akasaka Mine of Limestone were carried out. They are classified into two types according to their microstructure. The former showing grey or greyish black appearances is consisted with microcrystalline of under 2-10 micron, medium grains of crystal of about 20-60 micron and large grains of crystal of above 100-300 micron forming a net-work structure. The latter, white or greyish white appearances collected from Saruiwa and Shinguchi deposits is consisted with relatively large grains of crystal showing distinct boundaries of crystals and having a habit of disintegration to fine powder due to their mosaic structure.
The X-ray powder reflection by Geigercounter X-ray Spectrometer shows that calcite is dominant constitution showing intimate agreement with microscopic observations. The optical properties, impurities such as organic matters, iron compounds and species of fossils were measured and discussed.
The thermal properties, namely weight decrease on ignition, differential thermal analysis (D. T. A), expansion and contraction, thermal conductivity of limestone and slaked lime were also investigated.
