The purpose of this paper is to clarify, quantitatively, the thermal effect of posture upon the human body on the heated floor. Experiments were carried out under the following thermal combined conditions for air temperatures (ta) and floor surface temperatures (tf) : ta=24, 26, 28°C, tf=ta, 31, 35°C. These experiments were conducted for eight different postures, including standing, sedentary, sitting upright, sitting with legs crossed, sitting with legs sideways, sitting with knees drawn up, sitting with legs stretched and lateral decubitus. Three female subjects were exposed to these conditions. The corrected mean skin temperature and corrected operative temperature were used to evaluate the thermal effect of heat conduction between the human body and a floor. The results were classified into two groups. One group included data based on the premise that conductive heat exchange might be negligible in estimating the total heat exchange. The other group included data based on the premise that it was absolutely indispensable to take the conductive heat exchange into account. As the contacted skin surface area ratio with the floor increased, the corrected mean skin temperature was higher. The corrected mean skin temperature corresponded with corrected operative temperature for each posture, respectively. There was significant difference in the corrected mean skin temperature among the postures. This general tendency was confirmed by the relationship between thermal sensation vote and corrected operative temperature. Consequently, it was proven that it is necessary to evaluate thermal environment for each posture, individually.
