Although the sedative effects of a lukewarm water bath at 37-39°C and the inhalation of lavender oil have been reported separately, there have been no investigations of the relaxation effects of bathing with lavender oil. In this study, male and female subjects from 22 to 28 years of age were immersed in water at 39°C with and without lavender oil for 15 min. Several significant differences in changes between bathing with lavender oil and the control bathing (without lavender oil) were found, with the dif-ferences being most pronounced after bathing. Compared with the control, the mean heart rate of male subjects decreased markedly, and the mean coefficient of variation of R-R intervals of ECG (CVR-R) and the mean total'Pleasantness'score for female subjects, as measured by a modified Nowlis questionnaire, increased more with lavender bathing. These results suggest that bathing with lavender oil provides beneficial effects for both male and female subjects, and is more relaxing than bathing without lavender oil.
