The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the effects of regional cooling by radiation on thermoregulatory response. The subjects wearing only underpants and tennis pants stood in a climatic chamber whose ambient and wall temperatures including a ceiling were maintained at 33°C. After they reached thermal steady state in standing condition over 30 min, the wall temperature 50cm beyond their ventral part was decreased from 33°C to 10°C over 10 min. The ventral part of body was cooled for additional 30 min by the cooled wall using three different ways; l) the whole (the upper and lower) part of the body was cooled (W), 2) only the upper part of the body was cooled (U), 3) only the lower part was cooled (L) . Main results are summarized as follows: 1) The forehead skin temperatures became the lower level (W: 34.92±0.22°C, U: 35.04±0.15°C, L: 35.95±0.22°C) in Wand U than in L, 2) The decrease of tympanic temperatures were greater (W: -0.11±0.02°C, U: -0.04±0.02°C, L: -0.00±0.02°C) in Wand U than in L resulting in the greater decrease of the sweat rate (W: 58%, U: 48%, L: 17%), 3) The cooler thermal sensation and the better thermally comfortable sensation were obtained in W and U than in L. These data suggest that the upper part is more important than the lower part in reducing thermal strain.
