The high incidence of apoplexy in cold districts is widely known, and an increase in blood pressure with cold stimuli seems to be contributive to the trigger for its outbreak. The present paper represents an investigational study made in search for the influence of indoor thermal environment on the blood pressure (BP) of elderly people in their daily living. The investigation was made into elderly people and young men living in detached houses in Koriyama city, in summer and winter seasons. Besides, similar investigation, using increased number of heating apparatuses and elevated room temperature was made into subjects in winter season. Items for investigation were blood pressure, skin temperature, pen-corporeal temperatures and room temperature in 24h-measurement, as well as housing construction, heating apparatus and condition of subject's health. Regarding room temperature, a great difference in temperature was observed between living room and others of any housing. Regarding the variation of BP, behavioral condition-mediated variation of BP was observed in summer season under less influence of room temperature, while in winter season, BP tended to vary to the variation of peri-corporeal temperature, and especially, elderly male people with comparatively high daily BP showed a correlation between BP and pen-corporeal temperature. In view of the fact that skin temperature-BP relationship was accentuated for the hand region exposed from clothes, one room heating using a combination of Kotatsu and oil stove is thought to lead to local body cooling and variation of BP. Similar investigation with increased heating volume indicated relaxation of rise in BP at rising in particular.
