Three groups of rats, one was fed ad libitum and the other two were acclimated to a daily 2-hr feeding regime [food available at 1200 hr-1400 hr (light period) or 2400 hr-0200 hr (dark period) ], were used. Rats acclimeted to the diurnal 2-hr feeding regime consumed less food and their body weight remained significantly less than the rats fed ad libitum. Rats acclimated to the nocturnal 2-hr feeding regime consumed a larger amount of food as compared with the diurnal 2-hr fed rats, but consumed less food as compared with the rats fed ad libitum. Rats acclimated to the diurnal 2-hr feeding regime increased their heat production (M) and spontaneous running wheel activity (WR) for several hours before or after the 2-hr feeding time. In the nocturnal 2-hr fed rats, such large increases in M and WR occurred before the feeding time, but not after the feeding time. The slopes of the regression lines showing the relationship between M and WR during these periods and during the nocturnal 6 hrs period in the rats fed ad libitum were not significantly different. These results indicate that the relationship between heat production and wheel running activity is not influenced by the feeding regime and by the day-night cycle in rats. The results suggest that a hypothesis that animals acclimated to a restricted feeding regime run more efficiently during their foraging period is not valid in the case of rats.
