The effect of fiber materials in knitted fabrics on wear comfort and micro-climate between clothes and skin under exercise was studied using wool, descaled wool, cotton and 65% cotton 35% descaled wool blended fabrics. All fabrics were highly absorptive but low wettable.
Experiments were conducted in a climatic chamber under the condition that temperature is 26±0.5°C, relative humidity is 43±3% and air movement is 50 cm/sec. A subject took 1min. and 3 min. exercises using an ergometer. Local temperatures and vapor pressures were measured inside and outside of the sweaters at chest and back.
The subjects marked a ballot to communicate their sense of sweating, soaking, thermal sensation and comfort sensation. Physical properties of fabrics and drying rate were measured. Furthermore the local wettedness on skin and fabric were calculated.
All fabrics used are similar in the physical properties ; count, weight, thickness, porosity, air permeability, water absorption rate, moisture vapor transmission and thermal insulation.
We thought they were because of measurement in the steady state. But, the speed of dryness of cotton is higher than wool. The local wettedness of cotton was larger, however the sensation of discomfort of a cotton clothed subject showed smaller. The local wettedness on skin and fabric had a high correlation with four subjective sensations. Especialy, that on skin had higher correlation with them.
