An investigation is made of the validity of the <I>k</I>-ε model based on the eddy-viscosity hypothesis for the turbulent Reynolds stress. To this end, the <I>k</I>-ε model is applied to asymmetric channel flows with the logarithmic-velocity law imposed on the walls. The results obtained are combined with a statistically-derived higher-order representation for the Reynolds stress, and the negative energy-production rate, which cannot be calculated by the <I>k</I>-ε model, is estimated as a measure for the validity of the model.
