• We have investigated the bone atrophy in patients with rheumatoid arthritis who were going to undergo a total joint replacement, such as TKR or THR. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured in the distal one-sixth and one-third sites of the radius with a Norland's bone mineral analayzer 278. The mean values of BMD in RA patients with severely destructed hip or knee joints were significantly lower than those in the RA patients without them.
