A follow-up study on bipolar endoprosthesis for avascular necrosis of the femolar head was made on 35 hip joints in 26 patients. The average age was 50 and the average follow-up period was 3 years. In the operation 5 types of endoprosthesis were used, the Bateman curved Moore type (11 joints), the Bateman straight Moore type (9 joints), the Bateman APF type (10 joints), the Harris cementless type (2 joints), and the Bateman VS22 cemented type (2 joints) .<BR>The clinical results were evaluated by the J.O.A. hip score. Thirty joints (86 %) were satisfactory. Sinking of the prosthesis was seen in 5 joints, and clear zones adjacent to the shaft of the prosthesis in 5. Almost all of these were with the Bateman curved Moore type. There was proximal migration in 2 joints (5.7%) and clinical results were poor in these cases. There was no evidence of proximal migration and loosening with the Bateman APF type stem, and the clinical results with it were satisfactory.
