In order to identify the natural and artificial factors affecting the infestation of pastures with broadleaf dock and eastern bracken in co-operative livestock farms managed by the public institutions in Japan, the data obtained by the questionnaire method applied in 1981 by an incorporated body called "Nihon Souchi Kyokai" were analyzed quantitatively. This analysis dealt with 11 items consisting of 45 categories (Table 2) as follows; annual average air temperature, altitude, soil type, soil texture type, annual rainfall, inclination, year of farm establishment, percentage of pasture with tillage, total number of grazing animals per hectare, annual amount of nitrogen applied and cattle breed. The results were as follows;1) For broadleaf dock, inclination and annual amount of nitrogen applied were very significant factors followed by annual average air temperature, altitude, soil type and annual rainfall, in the descending order. For eastern bracken, inclination and annual rainfall were significant followed by cattle breed and annual amount of nitrogen applied (Table 4).2) The differences in the importance of the factors affecting broadleaf dock and eastern bracken infestation were particulary significant for the inclination, annual amount of nitrogen applied and total number of grazing animals (Table 4, Fig. 1). Pasture with a gentle inclination, high amount of nitrogen application and heavy grazing intensity, tended to be infested with broadleaf dock. On the other hand, pastures with a steep inclination, low amount of nitrogen application and light grazing intensity, seemed to be prone to the infestation with eastern bracken. From these results, it was concluded that in pastures under intensive management, broadleaf dock becomes a noxious weed whereas pastures with loose management tend to be invaded by eastern bracken.
