To analyse the ecological chracteristics of Rumex obtusifolius (R. o.) which is an aggressive weed growing in permant grasslands in Japan, a vegetation survey was conducted in various types of pastures located on the western slope of Asagiri Highland (840m) on Mt. Fuji.1. A higher incidence of R. o. cover was observed in a Trifolium repens type of pasture as well as in a Dactylis glomerata type of pasture which had been severely damaged and where D. glomerata formed the tussock. The largest number of weed species was recorded in a Poa pratensis-D. glomerata-T. repens type of pasture. However, the biomass of each weed species including R. o. was small. There were only a few weed species in the Phalaris arundinacea type of pasture and they grew poorly. Moreover R. o. had disappeared.2. A large number of R. o. seedlings emerged on the bare spot in early May. The larger the spot, the more numerous the seedlings, although seedling emergence was uneven.3. R. o. grew taller than T. repens and P. pratensis, but less than P. arundinacea which eventually overgrew it. Under the prevailing mowing conditions, the main stem diameter of R. o. increased in the following order: P. arundinacea type<P. pratensis type<T. repens type<R. o. pure stand.4. In the P. arundinacea patch which was formed in a pasture when R. o., grew profusely, R. o. showed a spindly growth in the center of the patch. At the same time the number of stems decreased, the leaves became erected and the light-intercepting efficiency increased. In the center of the patch, however, R. o. was no longer present.
