The reactions of electronically excited SO<SUB>2</SUB> with <I>cis</I>-2-butene in the presence or absence of O<SUB>2</SUB> have been investigated.<BR>By using GC-MS methods, the formation of ethyl methyl ketone, n-butylaldehyde, propionaldehyde, acetaldehyde and formaldehyde were confirmed.<BR>The formation of these carbonyl compounds occurred faster in O<SUB>2</SUB> system than O<SUB>2</SUB> free system.<BR>The concentration of carbonyl compounds were studied as founctions of initial concentration of precursors. The formation mechanisms of the products were proposed on the basis of the intermediate of electronically excited SO<SUB>2</SUB> with <I>cis</I>-2-butene.
