Remarkable changes of electrical resistivity were observed in marble and granite under uniaxial compression in almost dry condition. The maximum amount of the change was more than two orders of magnitude in marble and within one order in granite. The resistivity decreased remarkably just before the failure, and then it recovered gradually to the initial level. Concurrent humidity measurements show that water vapor progressively depleted from the sample as the resistivity recovered. The time constant of the outgassing process of water vapor was in good coincidence with that of the recovering of resistivity. When argon was used as atmosphere, the time constant of the resistivity recovery was approximately proportional to the argon pressure. These observations are interpreted in terms of a series of transport process: water vapor desorption, diffusion and adsorption through the crack network. Some implications were discussed in conjunction with short-term earthquake prediction.
